UPSC NDA & NA(II) General Ability Syllabus

The general ability test for UPSC NDA & NA(1) is divided into parts : English (Max. Marks 200) and General Knowledge(Max. Marks : 400)

Note: There is -1.33 negative marking for both English and General Knowledge.

Part A : English

The English section of General Ability test comprises of 200 Marks which include the following topics.

Grammar Rules and Usage(Articles, Preposition, Tenses, Adjective, Noun, Conjunction, Pronouns, Subject Verb Agreement etc.), Vocabulary(Antonyms and synonyms, Idioms and Phrases), Comprehension reading based questions.

Part B : General Knowledge

The General knowledge section of General Ability test comprises of 400 marks which covers the following topics including sections :Physics, Chemistry,  General Science, Social Studies, Geography and Current Affairs. 

Section ‘A’ : Physics

The syllabus for physics comprises of the below concepts.

Physical Properties and States of Matter, Mass, Weight, Volume, Density and Specific Gravity,Principles of Archimedes, Pressure barometer.

Motion of Objects, Velocity and Acceleration, Newton’s law of motion, Force and Momentum, Parallelograms of forces, Stability and Equilibrium of bodies, Gravitation, elementary ideas of work, Power and Energy,Effects of Heat, Measurement of temperature and Heat, Change of State and Latent heat, Modes of transference of Heat.

Sound Waves and their properties, simple musical instruments, Rectilinear propagation of light, Reflection and Refraction.

Spherical mirrors and lenses, Human Eye.

Natural and Artificial Magnets, Properties of Magnets , Earth as a magnets.Static and Current Electricity, Conductors and non-conductors, Ohm’s law, simple Electricity circuits, Heating, Lighting and Magnetic effects of Current, Measurement of Electrical Power, Primary and Secondary Cells, Use of X-Rays.
