Detailed IBPS SO Syllabus Based on New Pattern Prelims 2017-2018

The Institute of Banking Personnel Selection(IBPS) is holding an exam to recruit Specialist Officers. This year IBPS has introduced 3 stages of selection process i.e Prelims, Mains & Interview. The Prelims stage is introduced for the first time in the IBPS SO Exam. Total number of vacancies are released for selecting the aspirant for different posts in Scale-I i.e – I.T. Officer, Agricultural Field Officer, Rajbhasha Adhikari, Law Officer, HR/Personnel Officer & Marketing Officer. Since the notification is already released in November 2019, you should start your preparation by this time! So begin your preparation for Prelims with detailed IBPS SO Syllabus 2019-2020. The online IBPS SO Prelims exam will consist of 150 Qs worth of 125 marks in time duration of 2 hours.

  • All the test will be available bilingually except the test of English Language.
  • All The Prelims Exam is only qualifying in nature. The Marks that you obtain in the Prelims exams will notbe included in the final merit list.
  • Negative marking of 0.25 marks is there for every wrong answer.

IBPS SO Syllabus – Quants

(1) Simplification

  • Weightage →0 – 5 Questions
  • Easy to Solve, Less Time Consuming, High Accuracy Possible.
  • Question Types →BODMAS Rule, Approximation, Decimals, Fractions, Surds & Indices, Percentages, etc.

(2) Average

  • Weightage →1 – 2 Questions
  • Easy to Solve, Less Time Consuming, High Accuracy Possible.
  • Question Types →Average Weight/Height/Age/Marks, Average Money Expenditure, Average Temperature, etc. However, the concept remains simple. We have to use a single formula i.e. Average = Sum of Quantities/Number of Quantities

(3) Percentage

  • Weightage →0 – 1 Question
  • Easy to Solve, Less Time Consuming, High Accuracy Possible.
  • Question Types →Calculation-oriented basic percentage.

(4) Ratio and Proportion

  • Weightage →1 – 3 Questions
  • Easy to Solve, Less Time Consuming, High Accuracy Possible.
  • Question Types →Simple Ratios, Compound Ratios, Third/Fourth Proportion, Componendo and Dividendo, Direct & Indirect Proportions.

(5) Data Interpretation

  • Weightage →13 – 15 Questions (2 – 3 sets)
  • Easy to Moderate in Difficulty, Moderately Time Consuming, High Accuracy Possible
  • Question Types →Line Graphs, Bar Graphs, Pie Charts, Tables, Miscellaneous Infographics, Missing Data Type Caselets.

(6) Mensuration

  • Weightage →1 – 2 Questions
  • Easy to Moderate in Difficulty, Moderately Time Consuming, High Accuracy Possible.
  • Question Types →Area/Volume of Square, Rectangle, Trapezium, Parallelogram, Rhombus, Circle, Semicircle, Triangle, Cone, Cylinder, Cube, Cuboid. Also, Moulding from one shape to another etc.

(7) Quadratic Equations

  • Weightage →4 – 5 Questions (Comparison of 2 variables), 0-1 questions within other topics such as age, algebraic equations, etc.
  • Scoring, Easy if Proper Steps Followed, Less Time Consuming.
  • Question Types →Comparing values of x and y when two equations given.

(8) Interest

  • Weightage →2 – 3 Questions
  • Scoring, Easy if Formulas & Proper Steps Followed, Moderately Time Consuming.
  • Question Types →Simple Interest, Compound Interest, Mixed Interest, Instalments.

(9) Linear Equations in One, Two or More Variables

  • Weightage →1 – 2 Questions
  • Scoring, Easy if Proper Steps Followed, Less Time Consuming.
  • Question Types →Problems on Ages, algebraic equations, application based questions, ratio of ages, average of ages, etc.

(10) Profit and Loss

  • Weightage →2 – 3 Questions
  • Scoring, Easy if Proper Steps Followed, Moderately Time Consuming.
  • Question Types →Successive Selling type questions, Partnerships, Discount & MP, Dishonest Dealings.

(12) Number Series

  • Weightage →5 Questions
  • Scoring, Moderate in Difficulty, Moderately Time Consuming
  • Question Types →Complete the Series, Find the Missing Term, Find the Wrong Term etc.

(13) Speed, Time and Distance

  • Weightage →1 – 2 Questions
  • Moderate in Difficulty, Moderately Time Consuming
  • Question Types →Relative Speed, Average Speed, Problems on Train, Boat & Stream.

(14) Time and Work

  • Weightage →2 – 3 Questions

  • Less Time Consuming, Scoring, Easy if all cases considered
  • Question Types →Basic Selection & Arrangement Problems, Very basic problems on Probability.

(18) Mixtures & Alligations

  • Weightage → 1 – 2 Question
  • Tricky, Time Consuming
  • Question Types →Mixture of two or more entities/mixtures, dishonest dealings.

IBPS SO Syllabus – English

(1) Reading Comprehension

  • Weightage →10 – 15 Questions
  • Moderate to Tough, Moderate Accuracy Possible.
  • Question Types →The passage will be focused on topics like Business, Social Issues, Banking & Economy, Technology, Geo politics, etc. Fact and Inference based questions – easy to moderate, Vocab & Theme based questions – moderate to tough. Expect 7-8 synonyms/antonyms (vocab based questions).

(2) Grammar (Error Spotting, Phrase Replacement, Sentence Improvement)

  • Weightage →15 – 20 Questions
  • Easy to Moderate in Difficulty, Less to Moderately TimeConsuming, Moderate Accuracy Possible.
  • Question Types →Error Spotting, Phrase Replacement/ Sentence Correction, Fill in the Blanks.
  • Topics Covered →Tenses, Articles, Prepositions, Subject Verb Agreement, Parallelism, Degrees of Comparison, Sentence Construction, Phrasal Verbs, Pronouns, Adverbs, Non-Finite Verbs, Common Errors etc.

(3) Vocabulary (Cloze Test, Fill in the Blanks, Word Assosiation Pair)

  • Weightage →12 – 15 Questions
  • Easy to Moderate Difficulty, Quick Solve based on Contextual usage, Moderate to High Accuracy possible.
  • Question Types →Cloze Test (single passage with 5-10 questions), Fill in the Blanks (Double Blanks).

(4) Verbal Ability (Para Jumbles)       

  • Weightage →0 – 5 Questions
  • Easy, Low to Moderately Time Consuming, High Accuracy possible.
  • Question Types →Para Jumbles, You can expect Odd sentence out questions too.

(1) Financial Awareness

  • Weightage →15 – 20 Questions
  • Moderate to Difficult level of difficulty, Moderate to High Accuracy Possible, Not very time consuming
  • Question Types →Banking and Economy related facts like budget, railway budget, economic survey, etc.; Roles and functions of institutions like RBI, NABARD, SIDBI, etc.; Currencies of various countries; International Trade, Acquisitions and Deals; New Policies and Pacts; Trade Deficits, Exchange Rate, GDP growth, etc. of various countries; Banking related facts.

(2) Current Affairs

  • Weightage →7 – 10 Questions
  • Easy to Highly Difficult, Moderate to High Accuracy possible.

(3) Static G.K

  • Weightage →5 – 10 Questions
  • Moderate level of difficulty, Moderate to high accuracy possible, moderately time consuming.
  • Question Types →Important facts or events related to History, Polity, Geography, Science, Environment, etc.
  • Study Material → Demonetisation,Countries and Currency, INC Sessions, Important regulatory bodies, List of Cabinet Ministers in India

(4) Economy

  • Weightage : 5 – 6 Questions
  • Question Types : Indian Economy, Financial organization, Budget, Railway budget, EconomicsurveyGDP Growth RateGST, Business etc.

(1) Verbal Reasoning

  • Weightage → 5– 8 Questions
  • Moderate to difficult in difficulty, Time consuming, Moderate accuracy possible, Very likely to appear.
  • Question Types →Statement and assumption, statement and inference, course of action, cause and effect, statement and arguments, critical reasoning.

(2) Syllogisms

  • Weightage → 3 –5 Questions
  • Moderate to difficult in difficulty, Less time consuming, Moderate Accuracy possible, Very likely to appear.
  • Question Types →Direct questions with 3-4 statements & 4-5 conclusions, possibility based questions, negative information based questions.

(3) Circular Seating Arrangement

  • Weightage → 5 – 7 Questions
  • Moderate to Difficult, Moderate to Highly Time Consuming, Moderate to High Accuracy possible, Requires clean charting with proper technique and step-by-step solving.
  • Question Types →Uni- & Bi-directional problems on circular, square, rectangular, hexagonal tables. May be combined with other information to make it a Blood Relations or Double Line-up type problem as well.

(4) Linear Seating Arrangement

  • Weightage → 5 – 10 Questions
  • Moderate to Difficult, Could be tricky, Moderate to Highly Time Consuming, Moderate to High Accuracy possible, Requires clean charting with proper technique and step-by-step solving.
  • Question Types →Single or Double rows facing each other/ away from each other/ in the same direction. 5-4 questions based on multi-storey building. May be combined with other information to make it a Blood Relations or Double Lineup type problem as well.

  • Question Types →Coding by Letter Shifting, Coding in Fictitious Language. Expect Analogy based Fictitious Language as asked in IBPS PO Mains.

  • Question Types →Coded relations between letters to be decoded and solved.

(13) Analytical Decision Making
