The Jnanpith (Gyanpeeth ) Award is a literary Award in India, along with the Sahitya Akademi Fellowship, it is one of the most prestigious in the country. Eligibility is restricted to any citizen who writes in one of the 22 Languages listed in Schedule Eight of Indian Constitution.  It is presented by the Bharatiya Jnanpith, a trust founded by the Sahu Jain Family, the publishers of the newspaper ” The Times of India”. It is instituted in 1961.

The Jnanpith Award carries a citation, shawl, srifal and a bronze idol of Vagdevi  Saraswati and a cash prize of Rs. 11 Lakh. The first Gyanpeeth award was given to G.Shankar Kurup ( Malayalam Writer ) in 1965 with a Cash prize of Rs. 1 Lakh for his collection of poems, Odakkuzal(The Bamboo Flute).

But later in 2005 cash prize is increased to Rs. 7 Lakh  and was  given to Kunwar Narayan But now in 2012, cash prize is increased to Rs. 11 Lakh and was given to Ravuri Bharadhwaja. Gyanpeeth Award has been conferred upon fifty-seven writers.

About the idol of Vagdevi Saraswati

  • It is copy of idol of Saraswati Temple of Malava, Dhar
  • This temple is established by King Bhoj of  Vidhavysani  in the year 1035.
  • But Nowadays This idol is in British Myujiyam, London

Beginning of Jnanpith(Gyanpeeth) Award

  • On 22 May, 1961 family members of Sh. Sahu Santi Prasad Jain (founder of Bharatiya Gyanpeeth) has come a thought on the occasion of the 50th birth aniversary of Sh. Sahu Santi Prasad Jain (founder of Bharatiya Gyanpeeth).
  • Within this thought, On 16 September, 1961 Chairman of Bharatiya Gyanpeeth Smt. Rama Jain proposed this award in the trust party.
  • On 2nd April, 1962, 300 scholars of all languages of country  considered a topic in a meeting of  United aegis of Bharatiya Gyanpith and Times of India in Delhi.
  • To know the form  of this award continous meeting should be happening and finally In 1965, a decision has been taken for the first Gyanpeeth Award.

Selection Process for the  Gyanpeeth Award

Selection process of Gyanpeeth Award is Complicated. This process begins by sending a proposal from different languages institution  of teachers, colleges and authors. Language which is awarded in the current year will not be considered for the award next Three Years. Only alive writer are referred to the award.
Each language has a Consultant committee in which three literature commentator and scholars members include. These committees are constructed for three-three years. received proposals are detected by theLanguage Consultant Committee‘.language committee has freedom for the consideration of any writers.

According to the amendment  of 28th  rule , the writer is appreciated on the base of published poems of last twenty years except the awarded year.
