 1. Sushma Swaraj to travel to China next month

 External affairs minister Sushma Swaraj will travel to China next month to participate in the foreign ministers meeting of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO),

  • Swaraj‘s visit also comes in the backdrop of efforts being made by India and China to move forward after last year’s military stand-off in Doklam, which still remains an area of monitoring and strategic significance for New Delhi amidst China building infrastructure for its troops there.
  • Swaraj is scheduled to travel to Japan on a bilateral visit from March 28, and will also undertake a trip to the US to participate in the strategic dialogue in the ‘2+2’ format (foreign and defence consultations) in Washington on April 18.

2. SC extends March 31 deadline of Aadhaar linking till it gives its order

The Supreme Court today extended the March 31 deadline for linking Aadhaar with various services till the five-judge constitution bench delivers its judgement on petitions challenging the validity of the biometric scheme and the enabling law.

  • A five-judge constitution bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra had on March 7 said it may not be possible to decide by March 31 the batch of petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the Aadhaar Act.
  • On December 15 last year, the apex court had extended till March 31 the deadline for mandatory linking of Aadhaar with various services and welfare schemes.

3. Bidya Devi Bhandari elected as Nepal president for second term

Nepal’s first woman president Bidya Devi Bhandari was on Tuesday re-elected for a second term in office. Incumbent President Bhandari defeated Nepali Congress leader Kumari Laxmi Rai with an overwhelming majority in the presidential election.

  • Bhandari, 56, won since her nomination was backed by the ruling Left alliance of the CPN-UML and CPN (Maoist Centre), the Sanghiya Samajbadi Forum-Nepal and other fringe parties.
  • She became Nepal’s first woman president in 2015. With 148 lawmakers in the Federal Parliament and 243 in Provincial Assemblies, the CPN-UML commands a total vote of 23,356.

4. RBI stops use of LoUs for trade credit for imports

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Tuesday banned banks from issuing Letters of Undertaking (LoUs) — instruments used allegedly by diamantaire Nirav Modi and his uncle Mehul Choksi to be fraud State-owned Punjab National Bank (PNB) of nearly ₹13,000 crore in connivance of bank officials.

  • Punjab National Bank reported fraudulent issuance of LoUs/Foreign Letters of Credit for payment of import bills and fraudulent transactions in accounts, amounting to ₹12,967.86 crore, to the RBI through its fraud monitoring reporting system.

5. SBI reduces charges on non-maintenance of minimum balance

The State Bank of India day reduced its charges on non-maintenance of an average monthly balance (AMB) in savings account by up to 75 per cent, effective April 1.

  •  The above revision will benefit 25 crore bank customers. For semi-urban and rural centres, the charges have been reduced from Rs 40 per month plus GST to Rs 12 and Rs 10 per month plus GST.
  • A customer always has the option of converting the regular savings bank account to BSBD account free of charge, in case he desires to avail basic savings bank facilities without being subject to maintenance of AMB,

7. HFCL marks Rs 300 crore for Telangana optic-fibre plant

Telecom infrastructure developer Himachal Futuristic Communications (HFCL) has proposed to invest nearly ₹300 crore in Telangana to set up its first optical-fibre manufacturing facility with a capacity of 8 million fibre kilometres a year.

9. Govt panel to suggest fewer creditor votes to pass insolvency plans

Resolution plans under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC) are likely to get easier approvals from creditors’ committees, with a government panel agreeing to recommend that only 60 per cent of their members needed to pass these.
