Dear Aspirants, You already know that SSC CGL Tier-2 exam is over now. New Pattern for Tier-3 has been released for Tier-3 Exam. Written Descriptive Exam will take place in place of Interview or Personality Test this year. This offline Tier-3 will be Pen and Paper based exam that will test your psychological thinking and how will you formulate and bring your ideas and opinions to form the Essay and Letter in a certain manner.

SSC CGL Tier-3 will be a descriptive type Pen and Paper mode examination. This Tier-3 Paper has been introduced to assess the writing skills of the candidates which are necessary for Government jobs. This paper would comprise of writing of an Essay / Passage of 250 words and Letter / Application Writing of approximately 150 words.

  1. This would be offline exam based on Pen and Paper.
  2. Duration of Paper will be of 1 hours.
  3. This will be bilingual. You can write any one of language Hindi or English.
  4. Topic would include Essay Writing of about 250-300 words / Precis Writing as well as Application writing.
  5. Marks of Tier-3 will also be included in the final merit.
  6. SSC CGL Tier-3 Exam will be of 100 marks. SSC CGL Tier-3 Paper is comprises of two sections.
  • Section 1 : Essay may be of 50-60 marks.
  • Section 2 : If there is both Letter / Application writing as well as Precis Writing, they may each carry 20-30 marks each. If just one of these two are asked, expect the Letter / Application to be carry 40 marks.

  • Read newspaper daily to understand the effective way of writing and topics that are important in the current period. As newspaper provide content for every topic and you can understand how the paragraph is connected to each other and what other and what approach does the editor takes.
  • Read the editorial of well-known newspaper and build your own arguments related to the topics. Jot down the important points of topics and relate them in a good manner whenever you write.
  • Proper use of words will be set in your mind by reading a newspaper.
  • Reading a newspaper will also help in improving grammar as proper grammar is required in writing skill, so works also on your grammar portions.
  • Build your vocabulary as it will play a major role in any type of writing.
  • Write essay and get it reviewed by your friends or other persons so that you can work on weak portions.
  • Try to write what you know about the topics as many candidates write whatever comes to their mind and it also affects their marks after writing too much.

  1. You should know the proper format of Letter / Application Writing. The most important thing in the Letter or Application is its format.
  2. Introductory paragraph, main body and closing body must be in proper order as it plays a major role.
  3. Avoid rewriting and cutting in letter / application writing as it will put a negative impact on the examiners.
  4. As you know , Practice make a man perfect. So write letter / application to evaluate your improvement.

SSC CGL Tier 3 Descriptive Paper -What is Precis Writing ?

  • You will be given a passage based on an theme. You have to rewrite this passage in his own words with minimum words. Not rewrite the sentences.
  • Precis means सटीक in hindi.

SSC CGL Tier 3 Descriptive Paper – Precis Writing Tips

  1. Read and Look through the given / original passage carefully and try to grasp the idea that it wants to covey about. Try to find the theme of the passage and decide the heading based on the same.
  2. To quickly grasp the passage meaning, make a table of 10 × 10 and write important words.
  3. Size of the Precis should be less than the original paragraph i.e. about 1/3rd the number of original words.
  4. As you have already read the passage and understand what it is saying, Write the Precis in your own words. Try not to rewrite sentence as given in the passage.
  5. Redundant (निरर्थक) sentence can be dropped.
  6. This Precis Writing Topic requires more practice and do it through one-word substitution type of questions.
  7. Write in your own words by express the meaning and central message of paragraph.
  8. Keep remember not to exceed the word limit by a huge margin. 2 words more or less will not be an issue.
  9. You should be precise and clear as well as expressing while writing Precis writing.
  10. If your vocabulary (शब्दावली) is good, then it will be easy for you to write the Precis Writing.
