What is Census?

Census meaning is an official count or survey of a population. India has conducted the census 15 times till now. It has been undertaking after every 10 year. It was conducted in 2011 last time. Now it will conduct in 2021 year with digital devices by  Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India under the Ministry of Home AffairsGovernment of India.Census 2021 is the 16th census of India.

Why is Census Information necessary?

Census information is basically used to plan the provision of health care, education, employment, transport, etc. It is used to help determine where to build new schools, roads, health care facilities, child-care and senior centre. The Census is also an important economic tool.

How is Census data taken?

Government school teacher or census officer will visit each house and gathers particular information by asking questions and filling up the census forms. Whoever will take your information for census, that will be confidential. These filled forms are transported to data processing centres located at 15 cities across the country. They are also updating National Population Register (NPR). Census 2021 will also take place through mobile app available in android phone.

This time, male is in 1st class, female in 2nd class and transgender in 3rd class as compared to Census 2011. In 2011, transgender was in other category. In 2011, there were 4 class for visually impaired but 10 in Census 2021. This time one more question is also added i.e. ‘Have you any house at other place also?

Census 2021 work will be completed by 30 Lakh worker. Counting will take place digitally for 2021, so it will take less time. And officer consider that it will complete in 2 year in future.

  • Count of houses will be undertaken from April 2020 to September 2020.
  • Counting of people will be undertaken from 9 Feb to 28 Feb 2021.
  • Revision round will complete from 1 to 5 March 2021.
  • Although Census in Jammu & Kashmir, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh will be undertaken from 11 Sep to 30 Sep 2020 due to cold region. Revision round for these areas will take place from 1 Oct to 5 Oct 2020.

History of Census in India

Father of Indian Census is basically consider to Shakeel Anwar. It is mandated by Article I, Section 2 of the Constitution and takes place every 10 years.

First Census

The first complete census of India was conducted in 1830 by Henry Walter in Dacca (now Dhaka). In this census the statistics of the population with sex, broad age group, and the houses with their amenities were collected.

Second Census

Second Census was conducted in 1836-37 by Fort St.George according to the government website of Census India.

First Synchronous Census

The first synchronous census was taken under British rule on February 17, 1881, by W.C. Plowden, Census Commissioner of India.

In 1951 Census, India was having only 36 crore population and only people counting was done. But according to time change, more question was added in the form. In 2011, now population of India is reached to 12 billion (Arab).

Census 2011

According to the census reports of Indian Census 2011, the population of India is 1,210,854,977 with 623, 724, 248 males and 586,469, 174 females. The total literacy rate in the country at present is 74.04%.

Difference between Census and Demography

Census is the periodic count of the population whereas Demography is the studies the characteristics of human populations. John Graunt is father of demography.

  • Pretest in 5218 sample area of 76 districts.
  • Data collection of population, economic level, language, religion.
  • Recruitment of 5770 Enumerator and 989 teachers is done for Pretest.
